Paris ([paʁi] ( listen) in French, pronounced /ˈpærɪs/ in English) is the capital and largest city of France. It is situated on the river Seine, in northern France, at the heart of the Île-de-France region (or Paris Region, French: Région parisienne). The city of Paris, within its administrative limits largely unchanged since 1860, has an estimated population of 2,193,031 (January 2007),[2] but the Paris aire urbaine (or metropolitan area) has a population of 11,836,970 (January 2007),[4] and is one of the most populated metropolitan areas in Europe.[5]
An important settlement for more than two millennia, Paris is today one of the world's leading business and cultural centres, and its influences in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities.[6]
Paris and the Paris Region, with €552.7 billion (US$813.4 billion) in 2008, produces more than a quarter of the gross domestic product (GDP) of France.[7] According to 2007 estimates, the Paris urban agglomeration is Europe's biggest city economy[8] and the sixth largest in the world. The Paris Region hosts 38 of the Fortune Global 500 companies[9] in several business districts, notably La Défense, the largest purpose-built business district in Europe.[10] Paris also hosts many international organizations such as UNESCO, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the informal Paris Club. According to the latest survey from Economist Intelligence Unit in 2010, Paris is the world's most expensive city to live in.[11]
Paris is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. The Paris region receives 45 million tourists annually, 60% of whom are foreign visitors.[12] The city and region contain numerous iconic landmarks, world-famous institutions and popular parks.

Paris,the capital of France,lies on both banks of the Seine (塞纳河).Paris is small:it has a total area of 105 square kilometres (平方公里); but it is wonderful:Paris is a city with love,a great cuisine (烹饪),and famous architecture.The city has fascinated (迷住) writers,poets,and painters.Thomas Appleton (1812-84),a U.S.author,once said,“Good Americans,when they die,go to Paris.”
Known as the City of Light,Paris has been a major tourist destination for centuries.The city is famous not only for the beauty of its architecture and avenues (街道),but also for its museums.
Paris is divided into two parts:the Right Bank to the north and Left Bank to the south.It is the heart of the French- speaking world.

It is now located on both banks of the Seine River. The original settlement from which Paris evolved, Lutetia, was in existence by the late 3rd century BC on an island in the Seine. Lutetia was captured and fortified by the Romans in 52 BC. During the 1st century AD the city spread to the left bank of the Seine. By the early 4th century it was known as Paris. It withstood several Viking sieges (885–87) and became the capital of France in 987, when Hugh Capet, the count of Paris, became king. The city was improved during the reign of Philip II, who formally recognized the University of Paris с 1200. In the 14th–15th centuries its development was hindered by the Black Death and the Hundred Years' War. In the 17th–18th centuries it was improved and beautified. Leading events of the French Revolution took place in Paris (1789–99). Napoleon III commissioned Georges-Eugène Haussmann to modernize the city's infrastructure and add several new bridges over the Seine. The city was the site of the Paris Peace Conference, which ended World War I. During World War II Paris was occupied by German troops. It is now the financial, commercial, transportation, artistic, and intellectual centre of France. The city's many attractions include the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame de Paris, the Louvre, the Panthéon, Pompidou Centre, and the Paris Opera, as well as boulevards, public parks, and gardens.
